The Mayor of eThekwini, Mxolisi Kaunda, says he is confident that water will be restored to the northern areas of the city by Thursday next week. Areas such as Verulam, Tongaat, uMhlanga and Phoenix are the worst affected.

Kaunda says repairs to the Northern Aqueduct Pipeline are already under way.

He says, “We are conducting our Operation Siyahlola to give more assurance to the residents that have been affected by water shortages that there is work in progress.”

“Our teams are working tirelessly to ascertain that we deliver water on the particular date. We have mentioned which is our target – the 15th of February. We did outline and also unpack to the communities that some of the communities in the areas will start receiving water before the 15th of February.”

Kaunda says they have provided communities with emergency boreholes as a temporary relief measure.

He says, “We have also erected some boreholes in the area of Verulam. We are appealing to the community members that drawing water through your hosepipes to your own static tanks is going to cripple the manner in which we want to deliver water to communities that have been affected. So we are appealing that we cease from doing that and allow all community member to access standpipes and get water for their needs.”
