The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Vaal says the resignation of Emfuleni Mayor, Simon Mofokeng, is a victory for the residents of the region.
Mofokeng resigned amid allegations that he had sexually groomed a 14-year-old girl. He’s also been blamed by some for the Emfuleni municipality’s severe financial constraints.
Rand Water recently lowered water pressure in the area by 60% due to millions of rand in outstanding debt.
The DA’s Kingsol Chabalala says, “The Mayor’s resignation is long overdue and we’re saying this is the first step in the right direction and to ensure that Emfuleni gets a new beginning. The Mayor’s resignation is a victory not only for the DA, but for the people of Emfuleni. We are equally saying the Mayor must have his day in court and go and answer those charges against him of sexual grooming of a minor.”
