Northern Cape police have recovered eight bodies at a tailing dump site at a mining area near Kleinzee in the Namaqualand region.

The Nama-Khoi municipality in Springbok says police received a call on Wednesday morning regarding a tunnel collapse at the mining site. Nama-Khoi municipal spokesperson, Jason Milford says police are working to excavate more possible victims.

Upon arrival at the scene, authorities discovered seven bodies atop the tailing dump, while one body was found under the tailing dump.

In a collaborative effort to aid in the recovery process, De Beers stepped forward and provided essential machinery to assist the police in their search and excavation efforts.

As the investigation and recovery operation continues, authorities are urging all diggers and individuals to refrain from approaching the site for their safety.

The Nama- Khoi local municipality and the Namakwa District police are urging the public to extend their sympathies to the families and friends of the victims during this heartbreaking time.

Further updates on the ongoing investigation will be provided as more information becomes available.
