Durban residents who have been left homeless as a result of the floods that have wreaked havoc in the city say they will not be able to vote in the upcoming election, after losing their identity documents.

Mop-up operations are underway following the floods in which more than 60 people have been killed and over 1 000 others left destitute.

One of the residents in Umlazi says his life has been shattered.

“This thing, it’s been several times. We’ve got promises, there’s nothing happening, everything is gone. I don’t know where I’m going to stay even now, I don’t have food. We don’t have IDs to vote. They are only giving us material to build houses in the water, only fish live in the water.  I got nothing. How I’m going vote with no ID?”
