Suspected drug mule Garcia Carvalho is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ court next week. Carvalho was arrested for alleged possession of cocaine after a flight from Qatar landed at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) on Sunday.

The 29 year-old was found in possession of about 1,5 kg of cocaine, worth just over R500 000, hidden in a false compartment of her luggage.

In August 2022, drugs worth street value of 236 million rand destined for Australia were intercepted by SARS customs officers at OR Tambo International Airport.

Sixteen police officers were arrested in a string of charges ranging from dealing in drugs to racketeering and defeating the ends of justice in 2022. The officers were alleged to have been stealing drugs that had been confiscated from drug mules at the OR Tambo International Airport.

Drugs worth more than R20 million from three travellers at OR Tambo International Airport were confiscated in 2020. Two suspects arriving from South America were arrested after drugs were found in their check-in luggage. A third suspect, a South African, was arrested after he attempted to leave the country with drugs in his possession.
