Disgruntled ANC members in Klerksdorp threatening to go to court over LGE nomination processes

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Disgruntled African National Congress (ANC) members in the Klerksdorp-based Matlosana local municipality in North West are threatening to take their party to court.

They are unhappy about the party’s nomination processes. The members allege that candidate lists were manipulated and that candidates nominated by communities have been removed from the lists and replaced by people who are preferred by the regional leadership. Their spokesperson, Pakiso Mqikela, says six wards are been affected.

“Our demands to the ANC are that the ANC must sign under oath to say indeed they will go for the by-elections after the votes. The second is that we want the candidate that was imposed to write a resignation letter to the ANC with immediate effect on the second,” says Mqikela.

ANC Deputy Secretary Jesse Duarte told the SABC, should the ruling party be dragged to court, it will defend itself. She was campaigning in Mahikeng earlier today.

“In the North West, the habit of the people who don’t get their ways to take their ANC to court, they are welcomed. We will be there to defend the ANC. The election committee led by Comrade Kgalema Motlanthe has undertaken that after the elections they will come back and deal with all the disputes. So they have agreed sort of to start the beginning of the month but to start hearings after the 18th because they have to prepare,”  Duarte explains.
