Denmark FACTBOX

Reading Time: 2 minutes

FIFA ranking: 10

Coach: Kasper Hjulmand

Appointed in 2020, the former Mainz 05 manager nearly guided Denmark to the UEFA Nations League semifinals and also over saw a rare defeat of England at Wembley in that competition.

Captain: Simon Kjaer

Kjaer has played for his country more than 100 times and was appointed captain in 2016. The 32-year-old defender has been one of AC Milan’s key players this season in their push to return to the Champions League for the first time since 2014.

Top player: Kasper Schmeichel

The goalkeeper has been Leicester City’s rock at the back with 11 clean sheets as they won the FA Cup and bid for a top-four finish. He is one of only two players in the Premier League to play every minute of the campaign this season.

The 34-year-old has also kept clean sheets in his last three matches in the World Cup qualifiers.

Tournament history

Denmark were the surprise champions in 1992 after entering the tournament as late replacements for Yugoslavia, winning only two games in regulation time to lift the trophy.

The Danes have since failed to qualify twice, last missing out on the tournament in 2016.
