The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) disciplinary hearing for Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille is due to begin on Thursday.

A decision on whether the hearing will be open to the media and public is also expected to be announced..

De Lille is facing charges of misconduct and maladminstration in the City council, which she denies.

The DA wants a closed hearing, but De Lille insists that it should be open to the public: “The days set aside are Thursday and Friday. We will know if the hearing is open or not – if the answer is no, then of course there might be a delay.”

De Lille has said in the past she is prepared to go to court to demand that the hearings be open.

Chairperson of the DA’s Federal Executive, James Selfe says the case is an internal party matter.

“We have a constitution and rules of practice in place. When Patricia de Lille became a member she served in the Federal Executive for many years. I don’t understand why she now wants to change the rules. The ordinary position is that these things are in private, she needs to make a case to the panel, the panel will hear that argument and make the judgment.”
