De Lille asks for disciplinary hearing to be led by independent person

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille says she has asked that her disciplinary hearing by the Democratic Alliance (DA), starting on Tuesday, to be led by an independent and impartial person.

She says the DA is yet to respond to her request. The process has been set down for four days.

De Lille insists that the hearing should be open to the media, even though the DA wants it to be closed.

In a statement, De Lille says the hearing will chaired by a DA councillor from Tlokwe in the North West, Hans-Jurie Moolman, a friend of his and fellow councillor, Pogisho Monchusi and former Deputy Justice Minister in the apartheid government, Sheila Camerer.

She says her legal team will ask Camerer to recuse herself.

De Lille says Camerer is neither competent nor suitable to hear the matter as she has not practiced law in decades.

She says she will appear at the hearing on Tuesday and is looking forward to the proper testing of the allegations against her.

De Lille has been accused of maladministration and corruption in the City of Cape Town.
