The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it hopes that the party’s provincial leadership elected at the North West congress will help it win votes and ultimately run the administration of the province. The party held its provincial congress in Potchefstroom.
Currently the DA is the third largest political party in North West, but DA deputy federal chairperson Anton Bredell says they want to become the governing party in the province.
“We need to change the government in 2024. We believe that we can get the ANC under 50% and we believe that we can get the moonshot going, we can get like minded people to work together to the best interest of the people of South Africa. And that’s the message, and working towards that message, obviously to get our political party and the activists to prepare for that take away, because moving from opposition to being government is difficult, and they must understand the challenges of government.”
Leon Basson re-elected DA North West leader:
Leon Basson who has been re-elected as provincial leader, says his administration has great plans for the 2024 elections.
“Our first priority now, will be to make sure that 2024, we will have a moonshot election to make sure that we also take more people back to the legislature and to the province. And set us on a target to get in 2026, more councillors in the province and also govern municipalities in the province, to show people that there is a difference that we can bring as the DA.”
DISCUSSION of DA moonshot pact with Professor Ntsikelelo Breakfast:
According to a political analyst at the North West University, Professor Andre Duvenhage, he expects the DA to increase its support at the provincial and national elections next year, but he doesn’t see it becoming the governing party in the province.
“Their big challenge will be to become the official opposition, here in the North West. What is however, their big challenge is the fact that, the ANC, although losing support, is still a well established party. Then, we know that the EFF is making strong inroads in the support base, of specifically the ANC. So, I think their big challenge is to consolidate their position.”
The DA says it has been well supported in the North West, and believes it’s in a position to become the main political player in the province.
