Countdown to 2024 elections officially begins: Moeypa

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Chairperson, Mosotho Moeypa, has announced that the countdown to the 2024 National and Provincial elections has begun.

Moeypa delivered the keynote address at the Electoral Commission’s Communication Launch at the Gallagher Conference Centre in Midrand, north of Johannesburg.

The launch will focus on the final registrations, timelines and the requirements ahead of the elections.

He says that with independent candidates participating in polls for the first time, the public must be patient regarding necessary legislative adjustments.

“Almost everyone we have come across has expressed the view that the 2024 national and provincial elections will be a complex undertaking, we do not hold a different view. From now henceforth, the commission will continue to strengthen civic and voter education initiatives to make sure that voters are fully informed about their roles and responsibilities in the upcoming elections. This is important because an informed electorate is the bedrock of a thriving democracy.”

IEC Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Mawethu Moser, says today’s launch serves as an invitation for South Africans to participate in the electoral process.

Mosery says this is the chance for citizens to register for the polls.

“So, we’ll share that with South Africans and say, for now let’s concentrate on getting to be on the voters’ roll. Obviously, we do this having received the census figures which indicate to us that we have over 40 million South Africans who should be on the voters’ roll. We do have a huge gap to close because on the roll currently we have about 26 million. So, there is a good number of South Africans who are not on the voters’ roll that we need to encourage.”
