Case against 13 striking eThekwini employees postponed

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Durban Magistrate’s Court has postponed the case against 13 eThekwini Municipal employees who face charges of public violence and damaging essential infrastructure. They are members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU).

Workers affiliated to the union have been on an illegal strike since the 27th of February. They are demanding that their salaries be adjusted to mirror those employed by other Metros in the country.

Thirteen employees of the eThekwini Municipality made a brief court appearance. They are charged for allegedly being involved in illegal gatherings, public violence and damaging the City’s infrastructure. The state says it intends opposing their bail application as they are facing serious charges.

Members of SAMWU packed the courtroom to show their support for those arrested. The union has been on strike in the eThekwini Municipality for over a week now. This has caused major disruptions to the delivery of basic services across the City.

Some areas are still without water and electricity.

Union leaders refused to comment on the ongoing strike action and the court case.

The accused are expected back in court next week Wednesday for a formal bail application.

They were all remanded in custody.
