Police in eThekwini have arrested 13 protestors for contravention of a court order, damage to infrastructure and malicious damage to property.

This is in relation to the municipal workers’ strike in the city that has been ongoing for over a week.

Striking workers are calling for the same pay grade as their counterparts in other metropolitan municipalities.

Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says, “Their arrests came after a group of municipal employees had gathered in the municipal offices on Electron Road in Sydenham.”

“They allegedly put sand on the floor and burnt trees. They were forcing other employees out of the offices and damaged the gate. The arrested suspects will appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 6th March 2024.”
