Firefighters in the Overberg region of the Western Cape are optimistic that they will contain all veld fires in their district by Friday night.

Overberg fire chief Reinard Geldenhuys says most of the fires have been burning for the past two days after being deliberately started.

He says fires at Swellendam and Botriver have been put out, but active firefighting efforts continue at Franschhoek and Caledon.

Geldenhuys says a new team from Working on Fire fighters will be airlifted to the Caledon fire on Friday morning.

“We hope to be able to down scale operations on this fire by tonight, the other fires we have going is in Villiersdorp where the fire is high up in the moutain and we will probably put more teams, and evaluate the risk for the farms and decided whether we are going to put aerial resources in. The Swellendam fire was put out yesterday so we don’t have any problems on that side as yet.”
