The arts community has come together at George in the Western Cape for the rescue and restoration of the historical George Arts Theatre.

Over the next few days, they’ll be hosting the first Grand Ol’ Dame Arts Festival, to raise funds for the 144-year-old heritage building which is in desperate need of some TLC.

Some of South Africa’s top performers, such as Lizz Meiring and Marion Holm, as well as other locals, are on the programme.

Chairperson of the George Arts Society, Reneé van Rensburg, “So we decided to host this festival called the Grand Ol’ Dame because we invited two dames of South African theatre, Lizz Meiring and Marion Holm, and the whole plan is to raise money so we could fix our ceiling. Because the building is 144-years-old, maintenance is one of our big problems and obviously recently in George we had floods and winds and there are holes in our ceiling we have to fix.”
