African National Congress (ANC) councillor, Aaron Sebolai, has been elected the new mayor of the hung Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality in Limpopo.

Sebolai defeated Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor, Hercules Louw, receiving 17 votes while Louw got 11.

It is believed that some Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillors voted with the ANC.

Both the ANC and the opposition parties each have 14 councillors.

Sebolai says he’s committed to improving the delivery of basic services.

“We have a contract as (the) African National Congress with our people to give them clean water to give them better roads to resolve issues of sewerage, to attend to the electricity crises. We have a contract as the African National Congress with our people to better their lives.”

Meanwhile, DA caucus leader in Limpopo, Desiree van der Walt, says they will go back to the opposition bench to ensure that there is accountability in the council.

The mayoral position became vacant after the death of the DA mayor, Marlene van Staden, last month.

The DA has since hailed her as loyal servant who lived and served the community of Modimolle-Mookgophong well.
