ANC KZN members open assault cases following clashes with EFF during voter registration weekend

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Three members of the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal have opened assault cases following clashes with the members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) during the voter registration weekend.

The altercation took place in a voting station at KwaDambuza, an ANC stronghold, outside Pietermaritzburg.

EFF leader Julius Malema was on a voter registration campaign in the area when he had to force his way into the station after ANC supporters prevented his vehicles from entering the premises.

“We are aware now that two of those members were admitted in hospital. And after coming out of hospital they have opened cases with police. So, hopefully, the police will do their work on that matter and we will await the process of the police investigation. But we appeal to our colleagues in the EFF to comply with the regulations of the IEC,” says ANC Spokesperson Nhlakanipho Ntombela.

IEC Operations Manager in KwaZulu-Natal, Ntombifuthi Masinga is appealing for tolerance and calm among political parties.

“There is an electoral code of conduct that is enshrined in the electoral act that we use, which governs these elections. We would like to encourage all political parties and persuade them to make sure that their members behave accordingly. We want to appeal to political parties to say let us be civil amongst each other as political parties. We do not want to see, in this province, no-go areas where certain political parties are not allowed to access certain communities,” says Masinga.
