ANC members facing criminal charges trying to evade step-aside resolution: Mathekga

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Political analyst, Dr Ralph Mathekga, says African National Congress (ANC) members who are facing criminal charges are trying to make the step-aside resolution a technical issue.

The ANC says it will outline the process of the resolution today for those affected as the 30-day deadline expires. They include ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule and Member of Parliament, Bongani Bongo.

Magashule has been consulting with senior party members and former leaders, including Jacob Zuma on his fate.

Mathekga says the affected party members are not likely to voluntarily step aside.

“Magashule has made it very clear that he has no intention to step aside. He was asked to consult different seniors leaders of the the party, (and) he only consulted those who support his idea of not stepping aside. So, they want to make this thing a technical issue, as if it is not clear, as if the criteria of who should step aside is not clear, whereas it is clear. There is only one way in which someone can actually face charges. It is if they are charged by any of the authorities within South Africa,” says Mathekga.

Supra Mahumapelo defiant

Meanwhile, former ANC Chairperson and former Premier of the North West province Supra Mahumapelo says he is still a member of the party.

Mahumapelo and acting North West Secretary of the ANC Women’s League, Bitsa Lenkopane, have lodged appeals against their five-year suspension from the  governing party.

The two were found guilty of misconduct after allegedly convening a parallel meeting to that of the Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) in Mareetsane near Mahikeng in 2020.
