Eastern Cape strengthens efforts to curb COVID-19 infections

Health authorities in the Walter Sisulu Sub-District in the Eastern Cape say they are doing all they can to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 in the region. So far,  more than 1200 people have been screened and tested for the epidemic with four people being regarded as persons under investigation.

Health Services District Manager, Thunyelwa Moyakhe, says they expect results early next week.

Moyakhe says they are currently in Burgersdorp and they will proceed to other areas such as Steynsburg, Molteno and James Town in the next few days.

“We have embarked from the 15th in the mass screening and testing so we started yesterday at Walter Sisulu Sub-District where we were able to screen about 1200 people from our high-risk group which is Soul City location in Aliwal North and then there were four PUIs so we are still waiting for their results to come.”

Eastern Cape currently has 199 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The East London Correctional Services Centre in the Eastern Cape has 56 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Eastern Cape Health MEC, Sindiswa Gomba, says residents have begun to acknowledge the severity of the coronavirus pandemic.

Social distancing efforts:

The Nelson Mandela Metro is moving people into temporary housing structures to make sure those living in densely populated areas adhere to social distancing. The possibility of exposure to COVID-19 has created much stress and even panic in some communities.
