The lawyer of a Limpopo pastor found guilty of spraying congregants with the Doom insecticide says the pastor does not deserve imprisonment.

Advocate Edmond Lubisi presented his closing argument in mitigation of sentence in the Mookgopong Magistrate’s Court.

Pastor Lethebo Rabalago has been found guilty of five counts of assault and three of contravening the Agricultural Remedies Act.

Lubisi has asked the court to impose a fine on Rabalago.

He has recommended a fine of R3 000 or a three year suspended sentence for the assault charges. Lubisi has also recommended a R2 000 fine or a relevant suspended sentence in respect of the contravention of the law charges.

He says a prison sentence will no longer satisfy the public’s interest because that has already been done through a high court interdict against Rabalago.

He says the pastor has not sprayed anyone with Doom since May last year.
