The South African National Blood Service says the best Christmas gift one can give is blood.
The SANBS says adequate blood stocks should last up to five days.
Regional marketing manager Sifiso Khoza says current blood stocks nationally will only last up to about three days.
“The situation is not bad but we can obviously do much better. So we need 3000 units every single day so I would like to thank all the donors who came forward and found 30 minutes in between whatever they are doing during this holiday season to come and donate blood. In this spirit of giving, let us just give one unit of blood and save lives, not everyone can afford to buy a Christmas gift but the best gift that one can actually do is donate one unit of blood and save up to three lives.”
