ANC asks IEC to investigate disclosure of its candidates lists

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The African National Congress (ANC) has written to the IEC to request that the Commission investigate the circumstances that led to the unauthorized disclosure of the party’s candidates lists.

In a statement written by ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, the party says it views the unauthorised disclosure of personal information as a contravention of the Protection of Personal Information Act.

Mbalula further expressed shock at finding copies of the party’s National-to-National and Gauteng Regional lists on social media.

The deadline for political parties to submit their lists, deposits and signatures was yesterday.

According to the IEC’s timetable, provisional lists of candidates will be published for inspection on 26 and 27 of March.

Meanwhile, the ANC says its lists of national and provincial legislature candidates may include some of those implicated in the State Capture Commission report.

ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri has confirmed that members who have been cleared by the party’s internal processes are included in its lists.

The ANC will only make public its candidates lists on Monday.
