Focus on snake conservation in Limpopo

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As the warmer months, when snakes are more active, draw to a close, South Africans have been reminded of the important role of these reptiles in the eco-system. Snakebite season usually runs from October to April.

Feared by many, experts have also highlighted that snakes control rodents and mice populations — and that snake venom is used for medicinal purposes.

The Hoedspruit Reptile Centre in Limpopo has highlighted the importance of snakes in our lives. The centre is home to various snake species, including viper, puff adder, Mozambican spitting cobra and boomslang, amongst others. The centre protects snakes as they serve a crucial role in the eco-system.

Veterinary surgeon, Dr Jessica Briner, says snake venom can be used to make medicine.

SA Snakebite Season | Snake conservation and awareness:

Head trainer for snake awareness and venomous snake handling from African Snakebite Institute, Luke Kemp, says over 4 000 people are bitten by snakes annually. He says South Africa sees less than 20 snake bite related deaths per year.

Due to high temperatures and heatwaves currently being experienced — snakes are highly active. Experts warn people to be safe — not to kill snakes — but let them crawl to safety or call snake handlers.
