At least nine pupils from Jan Kempdorp Primary School in the Northern Cape were rushed to hospital after experiencing numbness, stomach cramps and headaches.

The pupils fell ill allegedly after eating chips they bought on their way to school.

Spokesperson for the Northern Cape Education Department Geoffrey van der Merwe says the pupils have since been discharged.

“The Northern Cape Department of Education is aware of a possible food poisoning incident at the Jan Kempdorp Primary School today. These learners were taken to hospital after showing signs of stomach cramps, numbness and headaches. They were treated and discharged from hospital after they were declared out of danger. The department is satisfied in the manner in which the school handled the incident. We further call on parents and school communities to be on high alert and check the products/snacks your children consume and purchase.”
