Poor security at SA, Botswana border remains a concern for residents

Communities living in the North West along the border between South Africa and Botswana say poor fencing and a lack of security remain major concerns.

They have raised their concerns ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s official launch of the Border Management Authority tomorrow.

A resident of Tlapeng village, Kgotlaetsile Nkaletse, says poor border management significantly contributes to high levels of crime in their area.

“People cross here like ants. Those from Botswana do their shopping in Mahikeng. They cross here all the time but they are never arrested. But when the Botswana citizens try to cross the border back to their country, local thieves steal from them.”

He adds: “Government just needs to make sure that this fence is fixed. So that our livestock is safe, and make sure that the military is always here, to fight crime and attacks on people at the border fence.”
