Media application in Gumede corruption case yet to be heard

Reading Time: < 1 minute

It is unclear when the joint media application to allow the recording and broadcasting of the fraud and corruption trial of former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede and 21 others will be heard by the Durban High Court.

The application aims to overturn an order by Judge Sharmaine Balton which bars the media from publishing recordings and visuals of the case.

It was instituted after the State raised safety concerns when shots were fired at the home of one of its witnesses.

The application was expected to be heard today.

The accused are facing charges including fraud and corruption in connection with a multi-million-rand waste removal tender in 2017.

The cross-examination of a former Durban Solid Waste Municipal official continues this week.
