Reading Time: < 1 minute

Sixty-five individuals accused of instigating the 2021 unrest are set to make their initial court appearance at the Durban High Court today.

The charges against them stem from their alleged involvement in the widespread public violence that took place in various parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng during the unrest, resulting in over 350 casualties.

The accused face charges such as conspiracy to commit public violence and incitement to commit public violence. Additionally, the State has levied charges of terrorism and conspiracy to commit murder against them.

Despite the severity of the charges, all the accused are currently out on bail. The court proceedings are anticipated to shed light on the roles and responsibilities of the individuals in question, providing a legal forum for the examination of the allegations against them.
