Train carriages are currently being removed from the scene where a train and a truck collided near Hennenman in the northern Free State on Thursday.

Eighteen people lost their lives in the crash. Authorities say DNA tests will have to be conducted before identifying bodies of the deceased.

Earlier Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) said it would assist the victims and the families of those who died to take action against the company that owns the truck, which it blames for the collision.

“Yes we will, we have taken to give them moral support, we would also support them with funeral arrangements using our road accident fund which is one our sister companies. So we are liaising with them to also make sure of these arrangements. We will give them all the support including those that are in hospital, we have to do this, it is our customers. We have to do everything that we can to make sure that we assist them,” said Acting Chief Executive Officer of Prasa Rail, Mthura Swartz.
