Slain Eskom employee Yende’s family seeks answers

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s been a year since Thembisile Yende’s brutal murder, and the family of slain Eskom employee says it’s yet to find closure. The family says they are nowhere closer to finding answers.

They have accused the police of not pulling their weight in the course of investigations.

The 30-year-old Eskom employee was found dead at a Spring’s substation. Her colleague has been charged with her murder.

Yende’s decomposing body was found in an office at her work place, two weeks after she went missing.

She was beaten. Her head covered with a plastic bag.

Nester Yende identified her daughter at the state mortuary.

The family believes Yende was murdered by her colleagues after she had planned to blow the whistle on a copper syndicate they were allegedly involved in.

The family blames the police on shoddy investigative work.

Thembisile’s brother Mboneni Yende says:”We are running this investigation as the family. There is information that we keep stumbling on and giving it to the police. Not enough resources are put into this investigation and hence we decided that as a family let us stand up and do our ground work to help with information.”

Police said they would not comment on a matter that’s before the court.

But the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is adamant the main suspect has a case to answer.

NPA’s Phindi Mjonondwane says:”The director of public prosecutions has been working closely with the investigating team guiding the investigations and that office has been in contact with the Yende family.”

The defence believes the state’s case is weak. The matter is due to return to court on Monday. This as the Yende family also plans a march commemorating their daughter’s life.
