Providing access to free education has always been my dream: Zuma

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Former President Jacob Zuma says providing access to free education had always been his dream. He was addressing an award ceremony for last year’s matriculants from Bizimali High School at Nkandla in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

This was Zuma’s first public appearance since his resignation two weeks ago. He says no child should be deprived of education because of his or her background.

Zuma however, says for free education to achieve its intended purpose it needs to be strictly monitored.

“We now have free education, in that Freedom Charter we are saying education shall be free and compulsory. I wish it can be an offence not to be at school whilst education is free. I was going to make it a crime to take drugs instead of being at school and all people committing such crimes were going to be detained.”
