The Female Farmers of the Year Awards ceremony, which has been organised by the Limpopo Agriculture Department, is underway in Polokwane.
The annual event is held during Women’s Month to celebrate women in agriculture.
Agriculture Spokesperson Joshua Kwapa says the awards are aimed at encouraging women to get involved in agriculture and contribute to food security.
“Well, this is an annual event which started in 1990 to celebrate and to appreciate the work done by the women as an economic sector … Reasons why the department is doing this is to ensure that women participate in agriculture, importantly to ensure our country obtains food security. Now, we are, therefore, celebrating the role women are playing in agriculture to support them financial through many other issues of knowledge, issues of training and so on. So, today we are celebrating the good stories of farming that is done by women in the province.”
