Road infrastructure and development has come under the spotlight in the Eastern Cape.
During a Morning Live election debate at Xolobeni in the Eastern Cape, various political parties raised concerns around difficulties encountered in travelling on the road leading to the Theophilus Tshangela Hall where the debate took place.
The ruling African National Congress (ANC) says it has made progress in building and improving many of the roads in the province.
However, political parties blamed the ANC for poor road infrastructure; saying that the ruling party is quick to make promises especially during election campaigning, but always fails to deliver.
Democratic Alliance Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) member Sithembiso Mabaso says the dilapidated state of the road demonstrates the failure of the ANC to its people; adding that the DA has an agenda of speeding up service delivery once it gets into power.
EFF Provincial Secretary Mlamli Makhetha told residents that if the party gets into power, a state infrastructure company will be established that will be solely responsible for making sure that all roads in the province are fixed to the highest standards and quality.
Mahketha also blamed irregular tender processes and corruption by the ruling party as one of the reason why roads in the province are never fixed.
Meanwhile, the Congress of the People and the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania urged Xolobeni residents to stop voting for the ANC; saying that the party has proven itself incapable of living up to its promises.
