Police in KwaZulu-Natal have warned communities not to take the law into their own hands following a vigilante killing at the KwaMashu Hostel north of Durban.

Provincial police spokesperson Thulani Zwane says the man was beaten to death after being suspected of committing crimes in the area.

“We received a complaint of a dead body at KwaMashu hostel on our arrival we noticed that it was a male who was allegedly assaulted by members of the community. We have opened a case of murder and we are also appealing to members of the community that they should not take the law into their own hands. They must report any criminal activities to the police or any suspected criminals to the police so that the police will do an investigation and arrest those that are involved in any crime”.
