Nine people have died after the driver of a bakkie lost control of the vehicle and crashed while driving through Ou Kaapse Weg, between Muizenberg and Noordhoek, in the Southern Peninsula.

Fourteen others have been seriously injured.

Cape Town Traffic Spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout says the bakkie was carrying 23 passengers at the time of the crash.

The road is currently closed.

An investigation is set to be conducted to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Bezuidenhout has advised motorists to use alternative routes.
