Nelson Mandela’s name features high in CT International Airport renaming

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Transport Minister Blade Nzimande says he is hopeful that the renaming of Cape Town International Airport will be concluded this year.  He says former President Nelson Mandela’s name is featuring high on the list.

Nzimande was responding to journalists during a media briefing on the Department’s report into road fatalities during the Easter period.  He says various names of anti-apartheid struggle icons are also on the cards for the renaming of the airport.

“We have started with consultations and the name that is high up there is the name of Nelson Mandela, but we will have to consider other proposals as well. There is the name of Sobukwe, then on Saturday there was also the name of Umam Winnie Mandela, so we will have to embark on a process of consultation and see what would come out. We are duty bound working together with the Department of Arts and Culture but it is not in doubt that Cape Town International Airport will indeed have a  new name, maybe sooner rather than later. We hope that it gets done this year.”
