Struggle icon, Albertina Sisulu’s daughter-in-law, Elinor says MaSisulu had the courage of a lion.

Sisulu was born on October 21, 1918 and died at her Linden home in Johannesburg on June 2, 2011 at the age of 92.

She was in the forefront of the struggle for almost half a century and suffered cruel and vengeful persecution by the racist regime.

This year, the country is celebrating the struggle icon’s centenary, under the theme, ‘A woman of fortitude’.

The centenary programme includes an unveiling of a special orchid named after her on Saturday and A Big Debate showcase with the Fees Must Fall leadership in June.

Her official centenary month in October will have a separate programme, such as a lecture in honour of her on the 9th, which will be delivered by humanitarian, Graca Machel and author, Sindiwe Magona will be launching a book on her life.

Elinor says, “She was a very warm and loving grandmother first and foremost. She was prepared to be in the background, she was prepared to be the grandmother looking after the grand-children and if you didn’t know her and you were to walk into their house you wouldn’t think, is Albertina Sisulu, the great leader?”
