Lesotho’s new political ‘kids on the block’ hold final rallies

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Lesotho’s new political kids on the block held their final rallies in Maseru ahead of the June 3 poll.

Alliance of Democrats and Movement for Economic Change were both formed in January.

Alliance of Democrats broke away from Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili’s Democratic Congress.

It’s message of reconciliation has done the unthinkable. It brought its leader Monyane Moleleki into an alliance with former arch-rival and leader of the biggest opposition ABC – Tom Thabane.

It has made in-roads among the youth.

Movement for Economic Change split from Deputy Prime Minister Mothetjoa Metsing’s Lesotho Congress for Democracy.

At 39, its leader Selibe Mochoboroane is the youngest among the front runners.

His track record, first as Minister of Energy where he led rural electrification and then Minister of Small Business has earned him a reputation of a “man of action”.

The biggest parties the Democratic Congress and the All Basotho Convention will hold their final rallies on Sunday.
