One of the oldest townships in Cape Town has kicked off its 60th year celebrations with a race that’s aimed at celebrating unity.

The Gugulethu Reconciliation Race took place Sunday morning with some 2 000 runners attending – with young and old taking to the streets of the township.

Now in its 19th year, the race aims to bring diverse running groups and runners together on the day the country celebrates Reconciliation Day.

They ran a 10 kilometre or an easier 4,2k race.

Chairman of Gugulethu Athletics Themba Shoko says the race attracts runners from far and wide.

“We organise the race so that people from diverse backgrounds around the Western Cape maybe all over South Africa they can come and run in the streets of Gugulethu. We always welcome and people always love to come to Gugulethu to the run the race.”

Runners from all over Cape Town made their way to the township which is celebrating its 60th year of existence.

Some says it’s one of the most anticipated races on the calendar and regard it as one of the best organised.
