The African National Congress’ (ANC) acting national spokesperson, Dakota Legoete, says disgruntled ANC members have had enough time to raise concerns with the party long before candidate lists were submitted to the Electoral Commission (IEC).

This as the High Court in Johannesburg is due to hear an urgent application by Free State ANC members who hope to declare the party’s ANC Provincial List Conference, held on the 10th of December as unlawful.

In the conference  11 members to the National Assembly and 30 to the Provincial Legislature were nominated and they want these to be declared unlawful and unconstitutional.

They want the PEC to convene branch general meetings by the end of this month to nominate candidates for the provincial and national legislatures.

Legoete however says the ANC is confident the court will rule in their favour

He says: “We will be going to court to defend the case because the ANC is confident the court will help us. The list process was held in November and January this year and adopted by the NEC.”

“It was registered in line with the IEC on 13 March and I think these members are ill-advised because we are now outside the electoral court and the matters they are raising have to do with the electoral process.”
