At least 50 people were killed in a bus crash between Nairobi and Kenya’s western city of Kisumu on Wednesday, police confirmed.
Police commandant James Mugera confirmed that 31 men, 12 women and 7 children were among the dead.
The survivors were taken to nearby hospitals.
Witnesses said the bus swerved off the road while driving down a steep slope, adding that the driver may have lost control of the bus.
Luggage belonging to passengers was scattered around the scene of the crash and the roof of the bus was ripped off as the bus overturned.
President Uhuru Kenyatta said authorities were investigating what he called a catastrophic incident. Police said they were investigating the cause of the accident.
