The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Free State has called on Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to dissolve the embattled Maluti-a-Phofung council.
This after municipality issued a notice that it is unable to raise its revenue collection and salaries will not be paid on Tuesday.
DA’s MPL Leona Kleynhans says the municipality should have been dissolved a long time ago as it has been dysfunctional for more than a year.
“I have had now that a minute ago the municipality has managed to get funds from the provincial government to pay salaries but that is a solution. What we need in Maluti-a-Phofung is a long-term solution democracy is just failing there’s a constitutional crisis and in that municipality now somebody has to now looks at other provincial government departments not willing to resolve this Council which is why has two which is what has to happen now so that the administration can get the money and can draw up the proper budget and a proper turnaround strategy,” says Kleynhans.
