Cheetahs captain leading his side on the right path

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Toyota Cheetahs Captain Tian Meyer has outperformed expectations as captain of the Free State outfit.

After five matches in the 2019 Currie Cup campaign, Meyer has led the side to three victories with one more game left against DHL Western Province this weekend,  before the semi-finals.

The Cheetahs, who are placed second on the log behind Tafel Lager Griquas, are favoured to secure a place in the semis.

Cheetahs lock Oupa Mohoje has been unable to lead the side as captain since picking up a serious knee injury in the sides Guinness Pro 14 campaign in 2018.

The scrum-half from Pietermaritzburg went to Westville Boys High school where he picked up on rugby.

Before joining the Cheetahs back in 2014, Meyer played for other South African rugby sides such as the Pumas, Xerox Golden Lions and the Griquas.

In 2016 he lifted the Currie Cup with the Cheetahs after they beat the Blue Bulls 36-16 in the final at the Free State Stadium.

He has featured in all five Currie Cup games so far this season.

With Mohoje still out on the side-lines, it is likely that he will continue to lead the side as captain in their upcoming Pro 14 campaign that kicks-off next month. – Report by Tshenolo Meruti
