The Toyota Cheetahs kick-off their 2019/2020 Guinness PRO 14 campaign this week, when they host Scottish side Glasgow Warriors in Bloemfontein on Friday evening.

Cheetahs scrum-half Ruan Pienaar will captain the side during the Pro 14 campaign. The 35-year-old had an impressive display in the Currie Cup earlier this month after helping the Free State side win the trophy.

Pienaar believes the Currie Cup was good preparation for the Pro 14 campaign.

Coach Franco Smith will coach the Cheetahs for the first three games in the Pro 14 as new in coming coach Hawies Fourie is still recovering from prostate surgery.

Smith will join Italy’s national side from January next year. Pienaar says he does not expect many changes from Hawies.

Irish side Leinster Rugby are the current Pro 14 champions while the Cheetahs had a dismal display last season.

Pienaar takes over as captain from Pietermaritzburg scrum-half Tian Meyer. He shares on being a prominent kicker at the Cheetahs.
