KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala is due to give an update on Sunday about the latest developments on the COVID-19 pandemic in the province, as well as the return of learners to school.
After schools were closed for a second time due to the pandemic at the end of June, primary school learners in Grades R, 1 to 4 are due to return to school on Monday. Grades 6, 9 , 10 and 11 learners will also return to school.
Speaking to members of the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) on Friday, Zikalala said that the number of new infections in the province per day has decreased.
“The curve has been going up with KwaZulu-Natal reporting more than 3000 cases on a daily basis. Right now the situation has changed. We are now going down, reporting less than 2000 cases. Last week we were reporting the average of 2000 cases. Right now it is 1500,” says Zikalala.
As of Saturday, the cumulative number of COVID-19 infections in the country is 607 045, with a death toll of 12 987.
The recovery rate continues to depict a picture of hope at 83%, with only 83 931 active cases.
