The multi-million rand fraud and corruption trial of former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede and 21 other accused will resume today after it was adjourned earlier this week.

The adjournment was granted to allow one of the accused, Cynthia Nzuza, time to familiarise herself with court documents since she is now representing herself.

Nzuza is the wife of former eThekwini city manager, Sipho Nzuza, who is also among the accused in the matter.

Cynthia Nzuza is expected to report back to Judge Sharmaine Balton on how far she has gone with reading and understanding state documents consisting of crucial evidence.

On Monday, she told the court that she parted ways with her legal team, citing financial challenges and irreconcilable working relations.

Earlier this year, it was placed on record that no further postponements will be granted for any accused should they encounter financial difficulties to pay their legal fees.

The court heard that Nzuza’s application to get a Legal Aid attorney was declined.
