WHO to increase engagement with Health department

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says it will increase the frequency of engagement with South Africa’s Health Department to intensify efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

The United Nations (UN) health agency’s Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has confirmed that he has been in contact with Health Minister Zweli Mkhize. Ghebreyesus was addressing the media in Switzerland, Geneva.

“We had a productive meeting with His Excellency Minister Zweli my brother and we have been interacting all along this a regular contact and we have agreed to boost our cooperation. We will increase the frequency of our engagement and based on some of the requests that RSA has, we will intensify our corporation and I hope to make progress in controlling the pandemic,” says Ghebreyesus.

On Thursday, Mkhize confirmed that the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is 408 052, the total number of deaths is 6 093 and the total number of recoveries is 236 260.

Gauteng remains the epicentre of the virus with 148 854 cases, followed by the Western Cape with 88 928 cases and the Eastern Cape with 69 445 cases.

The recovery rate is 58% where 236 260 people have recuperated from COVID-19.

South Africa has the fifth-highest COVID-19 cases globally.
