The Western Cape Department of Education says it’s investigating allegations of gender-based violence against some learners at Table View High School in Cape Town.

Current and former learners protested outside the school on Friday.

They are calling for justice for the alleged victims.

One of the alleged perpetrators, a 17-year-old, is the son of a well-known politician.

He’s accused of sexually assaulting five girls.

The boy’s father says the case against his son was registered with the police in November last year and an investigation is still underway.

Education spokesperson Kerry Mauchline says Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schäfer has received a memorandum of grievances from the learners.

Former learner and organiser of the protest, Megan Essel, says more allegations against the school are being made by former learners.

“We had a flood of anonymous stories coming out from former learners, going as far back as 2007, with stories about how the school has failed them regarding sexual assault, regarding a safe environment and the conditions that the school was creating throughout the period that the particular principal and deputy principal was creating.”

Meanwhile, a group of community members from Browns Farm in Philippi on the Cape Flats say they will march on Saturday to the field where the body of 17-year-old Amahle Quku was found.

Quku was allegedly raped before she was killed last weekend.

Community leaders have written to President Cyril Ramaphosa asking for his help to bury Quku and transport her body back to the Eastern Cape where she was born.

Community leader Ntlantla Kamnteni says they will also call for more police resources to be deployed in the area.
