The Western Cape government says it’s doing its best to improve the plight of farmworkers and their families.
A household census of residents working on farms shows that levels of education remain very low.
The census was commissioned three years ago as part of a key study to inform future policy.
Five years ago, farmworkers across the province embarked on a strike to demand better working and living conditions.
Western Cape Economic Opportunities MEC Alan Winde says: “I think since the strike in the agricultural sector our province knows that there are underlying issues. We now have baselines to help us as the department.”
