It’s been a somber Saturday for two Western Cape families. The community of Klawer on the West Coast gathered to pay their last respects to 13-year old Jerobijin van Wyk on Saturday.

He was brutally murdered, allegedly by a 56-year-old train driver, who apparently caught him and a friend stealing fruit from his garden.

A community still reeling after the teenager’s murder. It is alleged that 56-year-old, Daniel Smit, ran him over with his bakkie after he and his friend fled from Smit’s garden.

His remains were found in a drain on the property. Community Leader, Paolo Titus says the funeral has been peaceful.

“Everybody is here to come and stand in solidarity with Klawer and the family to share in the pain that we experience, so far everything went well the funeral is very peaceful it’s very sore but from here we will go to the graveyard.”

Smit was subsequently arrested. He will appear in court again on the 26th of April.
