The Western Cape Education department is investigating allegations of sexual misconduct at the NGO, Equal Education (EE).

The investigation comes after allegations were made by people from within the staff of the organisation, it is not clear whether any learners are involved.

One EE staffer has resigned, while two others are under investigation.

The incident has raised concerns as the Department says EE works in schools across the province.  Spokesperson for the department, Jessica Shelver said that the provincial minister also wants to know whether the NGO conducts background checks on its staff.

“The MEC has written to Equal Education requesting that they furnish her with the information regarding every interview or engagement conducted by the three alleged employees. She has also demanded an undertaking by 5pm tomorrow, Tuesday 22 May, that they will cease operations in Western Cape schools until such time as we have had an opportunity to meet with them and discuss the way forward,” said Shelver.

Shelver emphasized that they will treat this issue with seriously and should EE not respond they will instruct schools not to allow anybody from Equal Education.
